Gmmco Marine’s role in the Diving Support Vessels (DSVs) project for the Indian Navy

 is a case in point. To meet the shipyard’s requirement for a Propulsion System Supplier and Integrator (PSS&I), Gmmco delivered fully integrated propulsion and power solutions, including high-capacity Cat® DG sets of 2000 ekW and 3000 ekW units.

The project required adherence to stringent standards such as DEFSTAND, MIL standards, EMI/EMC compliance in line with applicable MIL standards, JSS55555 and Navy policy letters for stringent transient performance of diesel alternators—underscoring the level of engineering precision and execution discipline required. Leveraging Caterpillar’s proven technology, the propulsion system was fully designed, integrated and engineered in-house.

Subsequent engagements across projects such as Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs), Cadet Training Ships (CTSs), Retrofit projects for the Navy frigate and Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs)

 further reinforce a broader shift from vendors supplying components to partners owning system-level outcomes.

Chandrashekar V: The Visionary Leading Gmmco Ltd. into the Future of Infrastructure 

Few leaders combine technical expertise, strategic vision, and people-centred leadership like Chandrashekar V, Managing Director and CEO of Gmmco Ltd. Under his stewardship since 2019, this CK Birla Group company has transformed from a traditional equipment supplier into a comprehensive technology-driven solutions powerhouse. Chandrashekar reflects on his journey, Gmmco’s growth, and the future of infrastructure in India.

You’ve had an extensive career spanning over three decades in infrastructure, mining, and construction. What key milestones or turning points in your journey have shaped your leadership style? 

Starting on the shop floor taught me the value of hands-on experience while managing operations across Northeast India, Nepal, and Bhutan, and establishing the presence of a European equipment company in Southern India strengthened this foundation. 

Perhaps the most defining point in my career was a 14-year tenure in the infrastructure industry before joining Gmmco. Managing projects across hydroelectric, irrigation, mining, and oil & gas taught me the importance of effective decision-making and tackling large-scale challenges. These experiences shaped my “12th man” leadership philosophy—always ready to provide support but empowering my teams to lead. Leadership, to me, is about responsibility, not power.

Gmmco Limited is known for its world-class engineering capabilities in infrastructure and mining. What recent innovations or strategies has Gmmco implemented to stay ahead in these competitive sectors? 

Our transformation has been multifaceted. We restructured Gmmco into independent profit centres for Construction, Surface Mining, Underground Mining, Energy, Transportation, and Rental & Used Equipment, which allows us to deliver specialised solutions with operational excellence. 

A significant step forward has been the creation of GTS (Gmmco Technology Services), our Hyderabad-based subsidiary, which employs over 50 mining professionals offering full mining consultancy from exploration to ESG and engineering. Through a joint venture with Germany’s Hauhinco Holding GmbH, GTS employs over 80 engineers, advancing our specialised design and engineering services. Our strategic alliances with Schneider Electric and JLG further expand Gmmco’s role in the infrastructure sector.

The infrastructure and construction industries are rapidly evolving with new technologies like automation and AI. How is Gmmco adapting to these advancements, and what do you see as the future of these sectors?  

Digital transformation has always been central to our strategy. Today, over 70% of our customers are online, with 45% of parts transactions happening digitally. We use digital inspection tools and Scheduled Oil Sampling (S.O.S) for predictive maintenance, helping optimise equipment availability and enables proactive solutions like repair before failure. 

We’ve also invested in AI and automation to enhance our employee and customer experience. Our GmmcoAssist platform provides comprehensive services through multiple digital touchpoints, including mobile apps and web portals. This digital integration extends to our equipment, which features advanced telematics for real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Gmmco: Powering progress in India’s mining sector

India’s mining and construction equipment (MCE) industry is poised for significant growth, with localisation levels expected to increase to 70-80 per cent in the next 5-7 years, said ICRA in a report. It also noted that this shift could help the industry save nearly $3 billion in forex annually and boost India’s cost competitiveness, enhancing its export potential.

The MCE industry has already grown at a CAGR of 12% over the past decade (FY2015-FY2024), reaching 1.36 lakh unit sales in FY2024. The industry is set to become a $25 billion market by 2030, according to projections. A very recent report states that India’s MCE sector, currently valued at $16 billion, is projected to grow at a CAGR of 19% to reach $45 billion by 2030, according to a joint report released by the CII and Kearney.

The Indian mining sector is transforming rapidly, driven by the demand for critical minerals, greater digital adoption, and a focus on safety and sustainability. Mechanisation and the use of advanced equipment are increasing across the board. The future lies in automation, real-time monitoring, and predictive maintenance becoming standard across operations.

Considering that mining equipment forms one of the core pillars of India’s infrastructure sector, the government too is working in its favour. The Centre is working on a plan to incentivize local manufacturing of heavy equipment for mining.

Vikram Dev Dutt, secretary to the Union ministry of coal, says: 

“There is an element of import dependence, especially in the import of heavy equipment. Although there are segments and elements where we have fairly good indigenous manufacturing capability. We are actively working in close collaboration with Coal India to see how the indigenous manufacturing system for machinery could be incentivised.”

The impetus for local manufacturing of heavy mining equipment comes at a time when local production of coal has gained momentum, reaching a record 1 billion tonne output in 2024-25 to meet the rising power demand. Coal India imports high-capacity equipment, including electric rope shovels, hydraulic shovels, dumpers, crawler dozers, drills, motor graders, front-end loaders, and wheel dozers.

In response to the global trend toward decarbonisation, the mining industry is facing an urgent need to address machinery and equipment that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases. Efforts to electrify entire sites and advance energy management are accelerating to achieve both operational efficiency and sustainability.

The alliance between Sumitomo Corporation and ABB will enable the two companies to complement each other’s resources for decarbonisation and electrification of mining equipment, and to respond more flexibly and effectively to the decarbonisation initiatives promoted by mining companies. For the time being, the alliance will focus on the trolley assist system that supplies power to mining haul trucks from overhead wires, alongside efforts to decarbonize the existing fleet.

The new hubs expand Gmmco India’s complete service and supply network, reinforcing the company’s ability to support customers across mining, construction and infrastructure sectors in the region with faster access to equipment, parts and support.

The inauguration was widely covered across national and business media, with multiple publications highlighting the strategic significance of the expansion for Gmmco India’s infrastructure growth and regional reach.

The Butibori and Hingna facilities are positioned to enhance Gmmco India’s regional supply and support hubs, enabling the company to serve customers in and around Nagpur more effectively as demand for construction and mining equipment continues to grow across the region.

GMMCO India successfully inaugurated the 10th edition of the Caterpillar Bangalore District Cricket Tournament at the prestigious PadukoneDravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Yelahanka, Bengaluru. This year’s event holds special significance as it aligns with Caterpillar’s 100th anniversary, a remarkable milestone celebrating a century of excellence, innovation, and teamwork - a legacy that  resonates with GMMCO’s values and commitment. 

The opening ceremony was graced by the legendary Javagal Srinath, celebrated as one of India’s finest  fast bowlers and a true icon of Indian cricket. Renowned for his stellar career, Srinath’s presence brought immense prestige and inspiration to the event.

Speaking at the inauguration, he shared his thoughts: “It’s wonderful to witness such initiatives  that bring people together through sports. Cricket has always been a unifying force, and tournaments like these encourage teamwork, collaboration, and a competitive spirit. I wish all the teams the very best.”

- Day 2 (January 24): The grand final and third place playoff in a T20 format (twenty overs per side).  

Since its inception in 2014, the Caterpillar Bangalore District  Cricket Tournament  has brought together Caterpillar dealers  from across the India region, fostering  greater collaboration and camaraderie. 

Having been hosted in Colombo, Delhi, Chennai, and now Bengaluru, the tournament continues  to embody Caterpillar and dealer’s values  of teamwork and  innovation.

As the 10th edition unfolds, participants  and spectators can anticipate an unforgettable cricketing experience that reflects the  vibrancy, energy,  and competitive spirit  of this beloved sport.
